Strong colors: indigo, rare antique beauty ROTI IKAT INDONESIA SHAWL Hand Woven Blue-black indigo Click images to enlarge Description Shown here is a rare, antique, striking, dramatic, Rotinese, blue-black centered, ikat from the island of Roti, Indonesian archipelago. Roti is a small island lying between Timor and Savu and is the southermost island of the Indonesian archipelago, part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Motifs: Tumpal or triangle end-bands with patola inspired centerfield. According to James Fox, Australian anthropologist, "the cloth signified high noble status in Termanu". Similar cloth can be found on page 51 of INDONESIAN TEXTILES, articl by Professor Fox, Figure 3 showing Ibu Biredok of Termanu with ikat. Material: Cotton. Slendang or shawl worn by women and men. See old photo. SIZE: 26'x60" to the fringe. Fringe is 4". Vegetable dyes. Deep, rich blue-black indigo dye and Morinda red from plant sources.Vegetable dyes. Tannish, yellowish ochre color probably obtained from a plant. The colors are what make this ikat special, together with the fine weaving. Provenance: Roti island, Indonesia. Took a rocky, rough boat ride from Kupang, Timor to Ba's and collected this cloth in 1980. Condition: Very good, no holes. Upon payment, I will mail immediately usps. Thank you. Images sell!
