What is Rhodonite? Rhodonite is a beautiful pink stone with black spots and veins (dendrites). Both the pink color and the black color of the dendrites are due to the element manganese. The black drawing makes cut rhodonite very decorative. The stone is used, for example, for jewelry and jewelry, necklaces, decorative objects, and ashtrays. Rhodonite is found in many places, including Russia. There, rhodonite is often used in construction, as a decorative element for window sills and as a wall covering. The stone is also used for tabletops, countertops, and floors. In New Jersey (USA) yellowish and brownish rhodonite is found; this species of rhodonite is called fowlerite. Rhodonite is often found together with other manganese-containing minerals, such as rhodochrosite. Sometimes these minerals are even fused. The mixture of rhodonite and rhodochrosite is called lacroisite. If this mixture also contains tephroite, it is called torrensite. rhodonite countertop Piece of rhodonite countertop Rhodonite and rhodochrosite have the same main pink-red color but are otherwise very different. While rhodonite has black veins, rhodochrosite has white streaks. Rhodonite is the national gemstone of Ukraine, and it is also the national stone of the US state of Massachusetts. In gemstone therapy, the rhodonite is known as a first-aid stone, great to use in case of a shock after an accident. The rhodonite helps you to get over the shock, to let go of the stress, to surrender to the situation. That is why rhodonite is called the stone of surrender. Origin of the name The name Rhodonite is derived from Greek rhodon ('rose, rose fragrance') or Rhodos ('pink'). The ending -ite comes from Latin -itus ('belonging to'). Fowleriet is named after the American Samuel Fowler (1779-1844), physician, politician, and min-owner. Obsolete names of Rhodonite are horn manganese, manganese amphibole, manganese jasper, manganese pebble, manganolite. All names refer to the high manganese content of the stone. Rhodonite History Rhodonite has been known as an ornamental material for centuries. Rhodonite sarcophagi have been found. The black parts of the rhodonite, pyrolusite, were used as a pigment very early on. The pyrolusite was also used to colorless (heated) greenish or brownish glass, and to make a glaze. The origin of the name points to this usage: derived from the Greek words pyros ('fire') and loyein ('washing'). Reliefs in the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Djehutyhotep of the 12th dynasty (1900 BC) in El-Bersheh contain beautifully preserved paintings. The black pigments used contain manganese compounds such as pyrolusite. More than 2000 years ago, such manganese compounds were also used in the exuberant rock art in the Cueva Pintada ('Painted Cave') in Gáldar, once the capital of a small kingdom on the island of Gran Canaria (one of the Canary Islands). The mineral rhodonite was first scientifically described in 1819. This was the merit of the German mineralogist Christoph Friedrich Jasche (1780-1871). He then also launched the name rhodonite, because of its predominantly pink color. At that time, scientific names were mainly drawn from Greek and Latin. The Russian tsars of the 19th century were very fond of rhodonite. Large rhodonite vases can be admired in the famous Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. There is also a huge rhodonite bowl from 1867, 88 cm. high and 185 cm. wide (see photo). Numerous smaller decorative objects are also on display here, such as candlesticks, bowls, and goblets. For Marie Alexandrovna (1824-1880), wife of the Russian Tsar Alexander II, a beautiful sarcophagus of rhodonite was made. The sarcophagus is made from a single chunk of rhodonite and weighs about 7 tons. It was not finished until 1905. The tomb of Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) is also made of rhodonite. The Moscow Metro (built between 1935 and 1938) is decorated with beautiful mosaics and precious stone carvings. Mayakovsky terminal station is beautiful with an almost endless row of columns, the lower half of which is covered with rhodonite. Rhodonite has also been incorporated into the floor. Also worth mentioning is the congress hall in the Kremlin in Moscow, which is decorated with Rhodonite. Physical properties Rhodonite Rhodonite is a silicate with a high manganese content. The black dendrites and spots consist of pyrolusite (manganese oxide). The rhodonite type fowlerite contains about 7 percent zinc oxide. This causes a yellowish or brownish color.
