This is a Victorian sarcophagus shaped mahogany veneer twin compartment tea caddy. It probably dates from the latter half of the nineteenth century and has a mother-of-pearl key escutcheon and a half mortice lock which is secured with a single strike. Unfortunately the key has been lost. The inside of the lid and the underside of the base is decorated with a red foliate and grape pattern red paper covering. The box itself is divided into two compartments that each have a wooden cover which has an orange appearance. These may have been made from a blonde oak which has discoloured over time to produce this colour. The foil lining covering the compartments and lid is still intact which is quite rare. The caddy is supported on four rectangular pine feet. These are probably a later addition and the caddy would have originally sat on round mahogany feet which have since been lost. Condition The item is in very good condition for its age. The mother-of-pearl key escutcheon is damaged and is missing a third of its total. The red paper lining on the inside of the lid has some damage at its back corners which is visible in photographs 4-7. There is also some damage and loss to the same material on its underside which is visible in photograph 17. The veneer has no signs of cracking anywhere on the item. There are small sections of veneer missing at it corners (especially on the lid) and edges but nothing serious or noticeable. The box has many scuffs, scratches and marks on its body too numerous to catalogue. The most noticeable is on the right side of the lid and is visible in photographs 13-4.  Surprisingly for an item of its age there are no splits or cracks in the box itself. The hinges are solid and the lid closes correctly and securely.  There are no signs of woodworm in the box. There are scuffs on the foil lining in the tea compartments. Please see the photographs for an accurate representation of the item's overall condition. It is approximately 138mm high by 198mm wide by xxmm deep. It weighs approximately 583g The item comes from a pet free home. Please note we do not post outside of the UK.
