Item:223529435238Lovely antique Winterhalder & Hofmeier Mantel clock in working condition. Unsure on date but pre 1908. Engraved initials on the back, (W&H, SCH) Winterhalder & Hofmeier clocks from Schwaerzenbach, Black Forest, Germany. Brass feet and brass inlays in the front panels. Various scratches and couple of small chips in the upper, front surround but nothing serious or that couldn't be rectified with restoration. The inner door looks to have deep gouges however these appear to be to allow for free movement of the inner workings. There is also minor "graffiti" on the inside of the door but nothing that cannot be sorted. Winterhalder & Hofmeier were considered the finest clockmakers in the Victorian era. They were based in several towns in Germany’s Black Forest region. The company was established in 1810 by Thomas Winterhalder in Friedenweiler, southern Germany, and was continued by his three sons Matthäus, Karl and Linus. They lived in an old house that Thomas bought from a monastery. The family enterprise had actually begun a generation earlier as Thomas Winterhalder’s father, Nicholaus Winterhalder (1710-1743), was also an established Black Forest clockmaker, based in the nearby city, Schwarzenbach. He made quality clocks with wooden gears and stone weights.
