A skirt lifting a long skirt lifter, also known as a dress lifter, skirtgrip, dress suspender, hem-holder, page or porte-jupea was a device for liftinga long skirt or to facilitate movement.

In the dirty and muddy streets of 19th century England, women of meanshad to be creative to avoid ruining their skirts. Often, this meant using oneor sometimes both hands to keep the skirts elevated. Although this was useful,it was not always practical.

The advent of the skirt lifter in 1846 was met with immediate success. This device usually appeared as a pair of tongs or clips Made from brass orother metal, the skirt lifter has two circular padded grips or clips that holda chunk of the material of the skirt up. The lifter then connects to a belt atwaist level via a chain, cord,  orribbon. The chain can be pulled to lift the skirt higher in the case of passingexpansive puddles, mud, dirt, and other similar dangers.

Also, this creation allowed women to be more active in their lives, evengetting involved in sports like tennis, ice skating, and horse riding.

The first skirt lifters date from around 1846 and they were most popularin the 1860s-1880s.

This skirt lifter may be made in England and dates 1876.,however the country of origin and date cannot be guaranteed. The brass rods arestamped, Plant & Green, Regd. October 16, 1876.

The companyPlant & Green, Birmingham was a button manufacturer in the 1880s.  In 1900 they combined with a company calledManton and then were named, Plant, Geen & Manton. In 1907 these threecompanies combined with Thomas Carlyle and Harrison and Smith. All fivecompanies formed a new company called Buttons Limited. This company produced,at that time (1907), buttons, buckles, eye, hooks, and small wares.

The Manufacturing of buttons andother small wares under the "Buttons Limited" name continued in bothLondon and Birmingham. As their chosen company name suggests, buttons were theprimary product of this manufacturer, producing vast quantities for themilitary and civilian markets.

.

The somewhat more low-keyproduction of cap badges with the Buttons Ltd mark appears to be confined tothe two decades post WII, and yet we have not had a report of a badge designoutside of the 1947-65 period, although production of unmarked material isunknown.

In the early1970's Buttons Ltd was in the hands of the Holding company "Francis Sumner(Holdings) Ltd", later known as Francis Sumner Engineering Ltd. It isunknown at this stage if any button/badge production continued under the latteror if it remained a de facto holding company.

This brass, skirt lifter is in excellent condition, does not have any deep gouges orscratches, there are not any parts missing and is in good working order. Thecircular gripping pads have their original felt padding. It does have surfacescratches commensurate with age, usage & wear. Seller’s ref. AA223
