Dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian period this is a tea set comprising of a teapot, a sugar bowl and a milk jug. They were all made by Aktin Brothers of Sheffield and are ornately engraved in the Adam Style of neoclassical decoration which saw a revival in the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The design motifs include laurel and acanthus leaf scrollwork decoration on the bodies of all the tea set items and pierced work on the handle of the tea pot. This teaset was awarded as a prize by Joseph Thorley Limited and it has the words "Thorley's Special Prize" engraved on the front of the teapot in Gothic script. Joseph Thorley Limited or simply Thorley’s were a producer of animal feeds active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In 1860 they built a factory at Kings Cross, London, in Wharf Street backing on to a canal where they produced 'Thorley's horse and cattle spice, 'Rabbitum' for rabbits, 'Grula' for horses, cattle cakes and ‘Ovum’ for poultry. The firm were shrewd marketeers who promoted their products by organising newspaper adverts and giving out "Special Prizes" to those who reared champion animals on their products. The tea set was made by Atkin Bros of Sheffield who operated from 1853 until 1958. They used the makers marks of AB star S beneath a hand holding a bunch of flowers. This appears on the underside of the tea pot while the hand holding a bunch of flowers symbol appears underneath the milk jug and sugar bowl. All three items are silver-plated as although there are no markings on its body to support this it does have a silver-plated colour and appearance to it. It has also oxidised on its undersides as silver-plate would. Condition The items are in very good condition with no signs of impact damage related indentations or having become misshapen in anyway. They have probably spent most of their time inside a cabinet. The only sign of any structural damage is that the finial on the tea pot slants slightly forward and to the right when checked while holding the handle. The items all have a few minor scuffs and scratches on their bodies but nothing serious. The silver-plate itself is in a very good condition.  There are a few tiny areas where the silver-plate has pitted on the bodies of the items.  There are signs of the silver-plate having oxidised in places where it is hard to clean and on their undersides.  There are no signs of the silver-plate having started to bubble or flake. There are no signs of the silver-plate having worn through. Please see the photographs for an accurate representation of the item's overall condition. They also form an important part of the item's description. The tea pot is approximately 158mm high by 230mm wide by 114mm deep. The sugar bowl is approximately 125mm high by 150mm wide by 112mm deep. The milk jug is approximately 110mm high by 134mm wide by 86mm deep. Together they weigh approximately 1.347 Kg The items come from a pet free home. Please note I do not post outside of the UK.
