Seller: Top-Rated Seller kernowmanwatches (1.295) 100%, Location: Penzance, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 391940091728 Please see the pictures below the description You are bidding on an 8 day ships clock that was made during the second half of the 1900s by Aug. Shatz & Sohne, Germany. It is signed Shatz on the dial and is their 'Mariner' model. It strikes the hours and the half hours on a large bell inside, striking one to eight bells over a four hour period. There are six of these four hour 'watches' in a day, which stem from the time when seamen could not afford a personal timepiece like a pocket watch, and probably could not tell the time from it if they even did own one. An hour glass was used to time each half hour, when a bell was then struck. This was continued throughout the years of sailing ships, but a clock struck the hours of the watch in later times. The clock has had the movement completely dismantled and the springs taken out. It was then cleaned and all necessary work done on it before being re-assembled and properly lubricated. Although fully cleaned, the movement plates were not polished and left as original - there are naturally some stains and marks on them commensurate with the age of the clock. It is now working and striking correctly - it is wound through the front with the brass and steel key shown in the pictures, and the hands are set manually. There is a screw on the back of the case which can be used to silence the bell. The case is brass - it has no cracks. The surface has a matt polished finish, and the bezel is bright polished metal. Naturally, there are age related marks on both case and bezel. It has a slightly domed and bevelled glass - this has no chips on it. It is screwed on a laquered and polished backboard - this is original to the clock when it was made and is stamped 'Germany'. It can be hung using this backboard, but could, of course, be taken off and screwed directly to the wall. The clock measures approximately 15.1/2cm over the outside of the bezel - it is in the region of 9.1/2cm deep and measures 18cm in diameter over the rear mounting flange. I have tried to be very accurate with my description and mention everything I feel the buyer should know, however, please contact me if you have any further questions. If you are new to buying/collecting antique and collectable clocks, I can give you instructions on the general care of them, and how to regulate them for timekeeping. When you win the auction - please let me know if you are interested. UK mainland 24 hour shipping will be by UPS - the clock will be very well packed to ensure that it reaches you in perfect condition. I welcome overseas bidders, but please note because of its weight, it will have to go by carrier. It is essential that you contact me before bidding, as shipping prices can vary considerably, depending on your location, and can be quite expensive to certain countries. Item Number KMW1479 If you are bidding on any of my other auctions, I will combine postage on multiple items. Items paid for by Paypal will only be sent to the Paypal verified address. All UK items will be sent, unless otherwise stated, by Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded. All items, if under the maximum weight limit of 2kg when packed, will be sent overseas by Royal Mail Airmail International 'Signed For' service unless otherwise stated. Items are now sent this way to conform to eBay/Paypal regulations that safeguard both the buyer and the seller. This can make the shipping charge, particularly for overseas bidders, higher than possibly expected as the Recorded/Signed For service adds to the postage, particularly the overseas postage. I can accept no responsibility in the very rare event that items get lost in the post, but I will endeavour to do all I can to help the buyer by contacting Royal Mail and getting them to do the necessary search. Please be aware that it is illegal to falsify the value or contents on Customs documentation and under no circumstances will I do this. Overseas buyers are responsible for all duties and taxes, if applicable, that are levied by their Customs.
