History of Omega Watches You've no doubt heard the Omega watch name often, but I bet there are MANY facts about this company that you don't know. Read on! Each watch mark has the history. But it is far not everyone makes history as it has made Omega. The history of mark of Omega is rich with various achievements in the field of watch skill which at times amazed the world literally. In the Greek alphabet letter OMEGA is a synonym of total perfection. In watch industry OMEGA is, perhaps, one of the most known marks, a symbol of the absolute design and technology. Louis Brandt started researching and developing pocket watches in 1848 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The quality of workmanship and attention to detail would foreshadow the watches that would later carry the Omega name. Brandt continued making watches there until 1877, when he formed Louis Brandt & Fils company with his oldest son, Louis Paul. Louis Paul and his brother Caesaer moved the company to Bienne two years later. It remains there to this day. Innovators in every way, the Brandt brothers were the first swiss watch makers to use the divided assembly line. Allowing quality watches to be mass-produced, this process also allowed the prices of the watches to be moderated as efficiency improved. The company went through several name changes through the years--Louis Brandt & Frere (1891), Louis Brandt and Frere-Omega Watch Co. (1903), Omega, Louis Brandt & Frere (1947), and Omega Ltd in 1982. Through all of this time and through all of the name changes, the pride in quality of workmanship remained in the Omega watch. While accessible to the general public, the Omega watch has an outstanding history. Omega first mass-produced the pocket watch in 1894. By 1902 Omega introduced the first wrist watch. Omega has been the proud official timer of no less than 21 Olympic Games. Omega watches were designated the official watch of American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts. The Omega watch was the first watch to be worn on the moon. Neil Armstrong made that the case in 1969, and later by all Apollo crews. This gorgeous, designed ART MODERNE men’s watch is a very handsome specimen has a signed BLACK enamel STEEL dial with TWO sub-dials WORLD TIME – NEW YORK & LONDON. It featuring a 60 minute checkered outer track border, steel hands and steel Roman & Arabic numerals with the red XII (12).The dial is signed OMEGA below the red XII (12) and has trademark Omega symbol instead of the VI (6). Also is signed WORLD TIME – NEW YORK – LONDON. The case is STERLING SILVER and is in great condition, as are the lugs that are solid and secure. The TWO winding crowns are gently domed and in excellent shape, operating smoothly. The new BLACK dial and the new STERLING SILVER case have been professionally updated, and now are in excellent condition. Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent condition. The gently domed ACRYLIC CRYSTAL is in excellent condition. Peeking inside I discover a TWO clean, manual wind gold plated high-grade mechanisms. First movement for NEW YORK TIME with 17 (FULLY) JEWELS, BI-METALLIC COMPENSATED BALANCE with regulation screws and BALANCE TOP CAP JEWELS and CHATON of ESCAPE WHEEL with regulation screws and BALANCE TOP CAP JEWELS. This is identified - Anti-shock assemblies, and used to protect the upper and lower balance pivots from damage due to external impact on the watch. The movement signed OMEGA WATCH Co – SWISS – SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS – ADJ.TWO(2)POS. – #17,122,968. This serial number dates this watch to 1960 as per published production numbers. Also is stamped trademark Omega symbol and signed #482. Second GOLD finished movement for LONDON TIME with BI-METALLIC COMPENSATED BALANCE with regulation screws and BALANCE TOP CAP JEWELS is FULLY (17) JEWELED. The movement signed OMEGA WATCH Co – SWISS – SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS – #31,588,910. This serial number dates this watch to 1970 as per published production numbers. Also is stamped trademark Omega symbol and signed #485. The number of jewels used in watch movements increased over the last 150 years as jewelling grew less expensive and watches grew more accurate. The only bearings that really need to be jeweled in a watch are the ones in the going train - the gear train that transmits force from the mainspring barrel to the balance wheel - since only they are constantly under force from the mainspring. The wheels that turn the hands (the motion work) and the calendar wheels are not under load, while the ones that wind the mainspring (the keyless work) are used very seldom, so they do not wear significantly. Friction has the greatest effect in the wheels that move the fastest, so they benefit most from jewelling. So the first mechanism to be jeweled in watches was the balance wheel pivots, followed by the escapement. As more jeweled bearings were added, they were applied to slower moving wheels, and jewelling progressed up the going train toward the barrel. A 17 jewels watch has every bearing from the balance wheel to the mainspring barrel jeweled, so it was considered a 'fully jeweled' watch. This beautiful wristwatch has the TWO ORIGINAL movements in an excellent status which was very well saved, considering age of this watch. Mechanisms have been recently serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping great, accurate time. It is fitted on a new Handmade of THE WANDOLEC ART STUDIO 20mm black alligator style genuine leather strap with chromed steel buckle that has a great vintage look to it This beautifully preserved timepiece measures 44mm end to end and 31.50mm in width (34mm with crown). I always have beautiful pristine timepieces for sale ending Monday. Now on eBay for 10 Years! Recommendations for the owner of vintage watches: - All Antique watches are mechanical. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches). - Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped - because repairs may be expensive. - Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture. - If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust. - If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc. - Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard. - When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement. - If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours). - Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism. - Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches. - If the watch is dirty - allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down. - To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth. - Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement. - Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed. - Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good.
