This is a lovely vintage French pure homespun linen and hemp table cloth, originally using at the end of the vandange (wine harvest) when the grapes had all been collected and everyone sat down to eat, drink and celebrate. It's fabulous and is in wonderful condition for its age. Two small initials A R have been embroidered using red cross stitch to the top corner, through the passage of time these have now faded to a lighter red but still very apparent. The cloth I believe dates form the late 1800's to early 1900's and cloths such as these in this condition are getting harder and harder to find.
The fabric is a tightly woven homespun vintage French linen and hemp and has plenty of texture to excite as you run your hands over the fabric.
The fabric is a gorgeous pale white in colour with oatmeal flecks, it's tightly woven, yet still having lots of texture, slub and knobbles to it, it feels absolutely gorgeous and you just can't get fabric like this today.
To either end, approx 39 cms in there is a woven pattern, this has been made by red threads being woven through the cloth, again all done by hand but adding that extra interest.
Selvedge’s run to each side and the top and bottom hem have been tightly turned and sewn by hand.
These cloths really are truly delightful and make wonderful throws. Although in fabulous condition there are a few pale marks that may or may not come out when treated. I've tried to photograph them but they are so feint. Personally they don't offend me as they are so feint and really don't detract and are all part of the history of this gorgeous vintage cloth. However they are there so worthy of a mention and of course these small imperfections are reflected in the price.
A fabulous piece of fabric in super condition.
