Item:271823644578Style/ Origin/ Theme: Victorian, Material: Oak, Age: Antique, Pre-1900, Details: ~ Victorian Winterhalder & Hofmeier Black Forest Oak Striking Bracket Clock ~ This is a very handsome bracket clock from possibly the best clock makers of the Victorian era. The clock is front winding and strikes on the hour and the half on the single coil. The case is of oak with an arched top and has quarter carved columns to each side of the dial, it rests on small brass feet. To the front is a hinged bevelled glass, arched door. The dial has a brass back plate with gilt brass spandrels. The silvered chapter ring has Roman numerals for the hours. It has an outer ring for the minutes with numbers in increments of 5 minutes. There is a smaller ‘fast/slow’ regulating dial above the 12 o clock position. To the back of the clock is a material lined door that gives access to the movement. The back plate of the movement is engraved with the maker’s mark of ‘W&H Sch’ for Winterhalder & Hofmeier. ~ Dimensions ~ The clock measures 12 inches (30cm) high, 9 inches (23cm) wide and 6 ¾ inches (17cm) deep. It weighs 5.73Kg. ~ Condition ~ The oak case is in lovely condition. It would have initially been fitted with finials but these are now not present. The brass edge to the front glass door is somewhat tarnished. The dial has a little tarnishing also. The material on the inside of the back door has a few small stains. It is in good working order having been serviced and a replacement key is included. ~ History ~ Winterhalder & Hofmeier were considered the finest clockmakers in the Victorian era. They were based in several towns in Germany’s Black Forest region. The company was established in 1810 by Thomas Winterhalder in the town of Friedenweiler.
