Item:133152156586Gatcombe Antiques A rather nice, good quality Victorian writing slope, veneered in figured walnut and with brass reinforced corners and edges. It has two secret drawers, the original inkwell and original working lock and key. There is a central vacant shield shaped brass cartouche which matches the brass escutcheon. The brass hinged top opens to reveal a blue leather skiver with gold tooling. This has been newly fitted and is an identical copy of the damaged one it replaced. Towards the top end, there is a removable pen tray on the left, a nib tray to the right of this, and the place where the brass screw topped inkwell lives, on the far right. Both writing slope flaps lift up to access storage areas beneath. When the top flap is raised, the secret drawers can be accessed by lifting up the dividing section between the nib tray and the inkwell, which releases a spring loaded timber section, which in turn, exposes the two small drawers. The catch is slightly sensitive but in order to reset it, the timber section needs to be put back in place, and the dividing section then pushed back down. It has been carefully cleaned, re-waxed and polished and is in excellent condition. The leather skiver is just large enough to accommodate an A4 size piece of writing paper, on which to write your love letters. Measurements: 30 cm wide, 23 cm deep and 15 cm high. Aftercare: Cleaned and restored to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. You can occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
