Item:133119597321Gatcombe Antiques A very good quality and unusual Victorian campaign style, metamorphic, oak stationery box, with fold out writing slope and original lock and key. On the top, there is a brass carrying handle that folds down flat. After unlocking the box, it has a very clever catch that needs to be opened in order to lift the lid and open out the side panels: The key has to be removed and the small pin in the centre of the lock, pushed to the right. The allows the top to be raised which in turn, allows the writing slope and side panels to be opened out. Inside, there is a central waterfall arrangement of stationery compartments, with two boxes at the bottom, that open out: A nib tray to the left, and on the right, for a very small inkwell. The inkwell is no longer present, and so I managed to find a new small glass bottle with a cork, that fits in there. At the front is a brass plaque with the company's name (see photo). The writing slope has a new antique green leather skiver with gold and blind tooling, fitte. This is a sympathetic replacement, as are the other areas of leather. The base has been fitted with some new green baize. The box has been carefully cleaned, re-waxed and polished. It has been remarkably well constructed with good quality brass hinges and dovetail joints. The new leather work has resurrected it and brought it back to being a lovely and useful antique, once more. Measurements: 21.2 cm wide, 17.4 cm deep and 24 cm high (with the handle down). When open, it is 46.4 cm wide. Aftercare: Cleaned and restored to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. You can occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
