Seller: whatnotrousers (697) 100%, Location: Blakeney, Ships to: GB & many other countries, Item: 133131235798 Gatcombe Antiques A good quality Victorian burr walnut veneered, vanity box, fitted with a full complement of glass bottles and containers with silver plated or glass tops. Original working lock and key, circa 1870. The top has an unusual mother of pearl cartouche in the form of a laurel wreath, which matches the escutcheon. The top opens to reveal a variety of rectangular containers with silver plated tops, some with pierced decoration, glass bottles and jars, three having glass tops and four having silver plated tops, and all in excellent condition. The small jar towards the front right, must have been a replacement. It is exactly the same size and shape, but has engraving to the lid. In the central area, there is a red velvet rectangular tray containing three of the original manicure accoutrements: a pair of tweezers, a nail file and a small hooky thing, all with mother of pearl handles. This can be lifted out to access a red velvet lined storage area beneath. On the left hand side, there is a red velvet lined area for hat pins, with one still present. All the bottles and containers, sit within a larger tray that can be lifted out by using the two brass handles on either side. Beneath this, is an additional storage area. Within the inside of the lid, there is a removable mirror and on the reverse side, it is lined with pleated red velvet. It can be placed in the lid, either way round (see photos). It is released via a brass catch, situated behind the lock keep. It needs to be pressed in firmly until the mirror falls out. It's a bit tricky, but after it is released, the lid needs to be tilted forwards in order to let gravity do the rest. There is a secret drawer to the front, that is released by pressing a small brass button, situated behind the back line of bottles. When pressed, the spring loaded drawer shoots out. The drawer is lined with pink moire silk and was for keeping necklaces, bracelets, and of course, a tiara. It can then be pushed back in, and shuts with a reassuring click. The whole box and its contents, have been sympathetically cleaned, and the box re-waxed and polished. It is in exceptionally clean condition, and the burr walnut has a lovely mature warm colour and good patina. Measurements: 31 cm wide, just under 23 cm deep and 17.4 cm high. Aftercare: Cleaned and restored to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. You can occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
