Item:133111335065Gatcombe Antiques A very nice quality Victorian brass bound flamed mahogany veneered writing slope with original silver coloured screw topped inkwells and brass lock and key, circa 1870. It has a central brass cartouche with the initials "EBR" inscribed, and a matching brass escutcheon to the front. The lock and key are original, as are the good quality inkwells, that are situated in the usual upper end corners, with a central pen tray, a nib tray to the right and a small lidded compartment to the left for other odds and ends, such as stamps. Both the writing slope flaps lift up in order to be able to access the storage areas beneath, These have been veneered in satinwood which is a striking contrast to the ebonised edges and writing slope borders. The original damaged black leather skiver has been replaced with a new and very similar one. The tooling has been done in silver to match the inkwells which gives it a rather posh look, in my opinion. It has also been given a new green baize lining to the base. It has been carefully cleaned, re-waxed and polished. In excellent condition and ready to adorn your manor house! Measurements: 50.7 cm wide, 26.5 deep and 18.6 cm high. Aftercare: Cleaned and restored to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. You can occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
