Hashiguchi Goyo, Japanese 1880-1921, was one the finest Shin-hanga Period woodblock print artists of the early 20th century. Unfortunately, he died while still young, at only 41 years of age. This stunning reprint is by Watanabe and is of more recent date, c. late 20th century. Watanabe’s seal is on the lower left outer margin of the print. Instead of following in the footsteps of the earlier ukiyo-e artists who most often chose their models from the famous courtesans of their time, Goyo preferred to paint the geishas, waitresses and maids of his era. Goyo’s exquisite masterpiece. One of the most Japanese important art works of the 20th century. A young woman is captured in thought as she powders her neck. This print is embossed with detail on the kimono collar. There is also golden mica on the mirror as with Goyo’s first edition. The background is printed in soft white mica that beautifully sets off the portrait. This classic Goyo image would be a superb choice for the serious collector or interior decorator. It is an incredible portrait that would make a stunning impact in any room. Goyo’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago. ARTIST: Hashiguchi Goyo, Japanese 1880-1921.
