Circa 1825. These miniature knives were a novelty from around 1800 to about 1850. Obviously, there is no way to Maker mark a tiny piece like this; but it is known that Joseph Rodgers was producing miniature knives as early as 1800. A full sized magnificent multiple bladed Sportsman knife in Mother of Pearl with gold studs was made by J. Rodgers for the King of England in 1806, and was accompanied by a 1" long exact miniature of this same knife that was made by the best Master Miniature Cutler extant; also in the employment of Joseph Rodgers. This is a Miniature novelty knife with Mother of Pearl scales; and the entire knife weighs only 1 gram. This tiny knife is only 1/2" closed not including the tiny iron ring, 5/8" closed including the tiny iron ring. The unmarked hand forged open blade length is 3/8" with a nail nick and a sharpened edge. Overall, this knife is 7/8" open end of pearl scale to blade tip, and 1" open end of tiny steel ring at end of the pearl scale to blade tip. Both scales, liners and back spring measure only 3/32" in thickness. This piece has several early indicators; the ricasso has an early style kick to set the depth of the blade inside the liners. This piece has early style integral German silver file worked bolsters and linings found on late 1700's - early 1800's pocket knives; i.e., the bolsters and liners are one piece, with the liners filed thin, with the bolsters having traditional filed grooves. The tiny blade is very difficult to photograph, and has an overall light grey appearance with desirable spots of naturally occurring aging that takes 100+ years to form. This knife also has a half stop; i.e., the ricasso is ground flat to allow the blade to set at a 45 degree angle to the hilt. This is a feature found on high quality Sheffield knives; but certainly is not expected on a tiny miniature knife. The hand tempered spring opens the blade properly, and has a strong snap when opened to the half stop, when fully opened, and when closed. There is one minuscule crack on one side to one pin, and the edges of the pearl have slightly rough edges where it meets the liner; but can only be seen with magnification. The tiny pearl scales are secured by 3 German silver pins, en suite with the liners and bolsters. Most miniatures use brass liners and pins that are softer and less likely to damage the tiny pearl scales when set. The Mother of Pearl scales show multiple colors in the sun from Pearl obtained before the oceans became polluted. Note that it is extremely difficult to photograph such a tiny piece, and the images are MANY times larger than the actual size. This will be shipped in the protective clear plastic case as shown. Also note that the old gold ring linked to the tiny Iron ring at the end of the pearl scales was added to attach it to a watch chain as a fob as a novelty show and tell piece, but also to avoid losing it. This is a magnificent miniature Masterpiece that is old as dirt, and hand made by a Sheffield Master Miniature Cutler using miniature hand tools that they had to make to be able to create such a miniature Mother of Pearl, German silver mounted, 1/2, open and closed blade that snaps in a 1/2" long miniature pocket knife. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FREE U.S.A. & INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING, HANDLING, DELIVERY FOR USA PURCHASES, SHIPPING, HANDLING & DELIVERY IS FREE VIA U.S.P.S. If you wish to take advantage of any of the issue resolution options available from the seller, you must have the business courtesy to discuss any potential issue within 3 days of receipt, and gain agreement with the seller prior to requesting a return through eBay, leaving feedback or initiating any online dispute process. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller. Buyer must use appropriate shipping, delivery confirmation and / or signature confirmation (items $250 ) and/or insurance at the buyers expense.
