This is a ceramic bowl known as a  chawan  (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony).  It dates to the early Showa era (c. 1930) and is signed, Maiwa (see picture 5) .  The bottom base has an unglazed center used as a kiln footing  (see pictures 4 and 6).  This is a summer style chawan, lower and flatter (see picture 3).

This chawan measures  6 1/4" in diameter by 2 1/8" tall (16 x 5.4 cm). Having been in storage for over 80 years, it remains in very fine condition .
