Collection Information

Sulis Fine Art is delighted to present a large collection of original costume designs for a production of G.H. Clustam and Hubert Bath's opera "Young England". The show ran from December 23rd to March 24th 1917. In the style of William Charles Wilhelm RI (1858-1925) who is known to have designed another set of costume drawings for the 1916 production. These are held at the V&A.

We believe these designs are copies of the originals made for the production the following year, by an assistant or within the studio of William Charles Wilhelm/Pitcher RI (1858-1925).

Biography

As the Great War dragged on, this was the perfect moment for patriotism, and this rousing and totally fictitious tale of Sir Francis Drake was the right show at the right time.

The production was staged at Daly's for a limited season, but its success demanded a longer run. At this point there were no theatres available, and, after a bit of a scrabble, the show moved into Drury Lane for the
one month that it was vacant.
