US CIVIL WAR PERIOD DOCUMENT in shades of Black ink, the note/bond is Uniface, that is printed on one side only.

THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA - RECEIPT FROM $1000 BOND. Here is a $40 promissory note dated 1st March 1872.  Signed and hand numbered in ink by W H Dodd for Public Treasurer, this date in 1872 was not the date of issue, but the date that the value could be paid, these bonds were issued in the 1860's.

Subsequently WH Dodd served as Mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina in the 1880's.

This is a lovely little note, which would normally measures 2¾ " x 1¼" or  68 x 34mm. But as is was unevenly cut from a large sheet, there is some residual unprinted paper at the left side, which makes it a more interesting example  - see scan

The n ote has an individual number written in ink, no 2716 at the right which is quite difficult to discern as the ink has faded a little, but it is there. The note also has $40 printed on face in Blue. The note has a fold at the right side and some creases and some Yellowing to the old paper it is printed on. But it is in about Very Fine condition overall.

This receipt is from a $1000 bond, as printed on the face, to explain more fully what this is:- Someone would buy a bond to support the Confederate war effort, they would get this large bond with the Interest bearing receipts attached to the bottom or side. Every six months a receipt would be removed from the bond & redeemed for the amount specified. People very often just cut the receipt from the bond evert six months to claim the interest , others cut all the receipts out in one go, after the civil war ended, bond holders were unable to claim.  This item is in great condition the paper has yellowed a bit with age , but interestingly the receipt has been cut in such a way that has left extra paper at the right hand side (see scans).
