Carlton Crested Heraldic China WW1 WD Red Cross Ambulance with "Heanor" crest - slight damage This is a lovely model of a WW1 Red Cross Ambulance, by Carlton China. As a piece of crested souvenir ware, it is hand-decorated with the coat of arms of Heanor town.  10 cm, 5.5cm high  5cm wide This backstamp was used between 1903 and c.1926 and because of the subject matter, this item would have been produced in the 1920s. This is not a perfect example, but this town crest is scarce and the model is a popular subject. The gilding is a little rubbed. Back stamp slightly smudged.(please note that the gilded edges show as black in some photos, this is just due to the light.) There is an extremely fine and shallow glaze crack on one side of the vehicle; virtually imperceptible: you really would have to look very closely to see it and it does not go deep. I had to take a magnifying glass to it to be able to see it at all and it really doesn't detract. There is another crack which does show, but it is on the bottom of the piece, across the back axle. Because of where it is, it doesn't unduly detract and can't be seen if the piece is displayed. For that reason, this is an affordable collection filler and also, I believe that this particular crest is quite rare. So this is still a great piece to own! They are quite sought after. I have done my best to photograph this slight damage, so please look at ALL the photos. Carlton China was started in 1890 in Stoke, England, by Wiltshaw and Robinson. After a few takeovers in its life, Carlton Ware was relaunched in 1990.  The coming of the railways in the 19th C allowed working people to visit locations for day trips or holidays and these little "Heraldic" or "Crested" china items soon became popular as souvenirs to bring home. These were miniatures of a whole variety of items and artefacts, each bearing the coat of arms of the place visited. Although crested ware fell out of fashion some time back, it is enjoying a revival now and is of great interest to the collector. There is a design and locality for every taste and price for every pocket, making this a fascinating (and potentially addictive) hobby! Happy bidding!
