Georgian Engraved Convict Love Token, c.1830. A Gift From Son To Mother. Probably Engraved On A George III ‘Cartwheel’ Penny (1797 Only). Henry Bubb To Amy Bubb.


Obv: Engraved with a scene of son and mother, “Amy Bubb Aged 59, H Bubb Aged 22”. Rev: “Tho time may pass & years may fly, every oak decay & die & every joyful dream may set you I never can forget, My Mother”. With floral sprays.


Henry Bubb, son of Thomas and Amy (nee Hope) Bubb, was born in Bristol in 1811, he was later deported to Australia as a convict in the 1830’s after being found guilty of stealing six pigeons (not his first offence). He sailed along with almost 400 other male convict on board the ‘Moffatt’, a voyage that took 116 days. Three deaths occurred during the journey. With a good record after years of hard labour or private service, he was given his Ticket of Leave in 1840 then his Certificate of Freedom in 1843. He went on to marry and have children.


A truly charming piece, an interesting piece of social history. Unusual being a son and mother token of love. Cleaned sometime in the past, a few edge bumps and surface marks.
