John Thwaites was apprenticed in c.1772 to his father Aynsworth Thwaites who founded the business in c. 1740. John Thwaites was Master of the Clockmakers' Company in 1815, 1819 and 1820. In 1816, Thwaites partnered with George Jeremiah Reed, and the firm became Thwaites & Reed. Along with selling their own clocks they supplied high quality clock movements to the trade, including the well known clockmakers, Dutton, Dwerrihouse, Ellicott and Vulliamy. The ebony veneered and ebonised break arch case has well pierced brass fretts to the sides and front which retain their original gilding and a glazed rear door which allows the movement to be seen. The front door opens in its entirety the reveal the 8 inch restored painted convex dial and its strike / silent lever above 12 o'clock. The pierced and gilded hands are original The substantial shouldered plate double fusee 8 day duration movement strikes the hours on a bell and the edge engraved back plate is signed by the maker .As can be seen from the images this clock is in excellent original condition throughout and is ready to be displayed in the home.It has deliberately been sympathetically cleaned to retain as much of the original patina as possible and will delight those clients who prefer their antiques in this condition . Of course there are some age related marks and slight cracks in the ebony veneer as can be expected but when you consider that this item is over 200 years old it is no surprise. The case and mounts can be fully restored and re polished if the buyer requires but this will incur additional expense. Personally I love the condition as it is. This clock is 19 inches tall (handle up). The width is 12 inches and the depth 7 3/4. This is a genuine and original clock and I offer a full money back guarantee to this end. Any potential clients are very welcome to view the clock prior to purchase (or pay on delivery)to ensure that they are satisfied with their purchase.
