He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the period and a pivotal figure in modernist music. Stravinsky was born on June 5, 1882, in Oranienbaum (now Lomonosov), near St. Petersburg, Russia. His father Fyodor was a bass singer and his mother was a pianist. He grew up in a musical family however, his parents initially did not want him to become a musician and directed him towards law school. Despite this, Stravinsky's encounter with Tchaikovsky at a young age strengthened his desire to become a composer.  Stravinsky's compositions had a profound impact on the music world. His ballet, "The Rite of Spring," premiered in 1913 causing a scandal due to its innovative and unconventional style. The piece featured shifting and audacious rhythms, unresolved dissonances, and marked a turning point in modernist music. His prolific productivity lasted for over 60 years and he remained an active participant in the various musical currents of his time. Throughout his career, he explored different styles and genres, from neo-classicism to serialism. Stravinsky's innovative approach to composition influenced many other composers and musicians. His works continue to be performed and studied today, and he is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.
