This wonderful portrait is by the fantastic Japanese ukiyo-e artist Toshusai Sharaku (Japanese, fl. 1794-1795). The title is Osagawa Tsuneyo II as Takemura Tada no Shin’s wife in the play Koinyôbô Somewake Tazuna. Sharaku was active for only a brief period, just ten months between 1794 and 1795. Very little is known of him before or after this period and his identity is the object of much conjecture among historians of Japanese art. The most likely theory is that he was one Saitō Jūrobei originally a nō actor in the service of the Lord of Awa. Whoever he was, he was a man of enormous talent, His extensive artistic abilities enabled him to create his portraits in a style that was far ahead of his time. His designs still stand today as the unchallenged quintessence of Kabuki Theater. Some are the most coveted art of the floating world.
