Be sure to have a look at our other items! This is a very nice, large, working, deeply hand carved 8 day cuckoo clock with a rare 3-bird case that was produced about 50 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, "West Germany" by "Emil Schmeckenbecher," one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world! The clock has a beautiful blended red mahogany finish, works very well here, cuckoos as it should, and keeps good time too. It is quite impressive, gorgeous on display, and equally impressive in size too measuring about 15 1/2" or so high (from the tip of the bird on top to the bottom of the grape branches on the bottom and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" at its deepest point, and about 9 1/2" or so across the top. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood that is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It looks very much like an intricately carved grape vine with five, large, deeply carved wooden grape leaves on the front of the case. There is a hand carved wooden bird on either side of the dial staring upward with their red eyes at a larger, beautifully carved bird perched atop the clock in the grape vine; very nice. The dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The clock has a wooden back secured with two metal latches. It removes to allow access to the weight driven mechanical movement created by "Regula" and bearing the Schmeckenbecher name. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. The tall bellow or whistle tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled cathedral chime inside the case and when he's finished, the bird retreats back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock and closing the door; fascinating! Keep in mind that even though the clock looks fairly new, it is not. It is an old clock and we do not know the service history though the movement does show signs of having been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve this classic clock and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, an unusual hand carved flying bird pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I've looked the clock over fairly well and only find modest amounts of wear and no missing parts. I did see that the bird pendulum was repaired at some point but it's not at all detracting. The clock is absolutely gorgeous on display and is certain to capture the imagination of any guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, hand carved, 8 day German timepiece with a real legacy behind it.
