Seller: commits (9.119) 98.8%, Location: Yucaipa, California, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 113853423975 We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our other items! This is a beautiful, deeply hand carved, absolutely gorgeous animated, musical cuckoo clock that was produced about 35 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, "Karlsruhe, West Germany" by "Albert Schwab," one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world! It is a rare design featuring hand carved animated birds fluttering above a hand carved nest with two carved wooden birds in the nest; just breathtaking! This clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It looks like an intricate grape vine and features four deeply carved, large grape leaves on the lower and upper parts of the clock as well as more leaves behind the nest itself. It has a beautiful blended finish unlike any I've ever seen! There is also a larger hand carved bird snuggled into the grape vine atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features large Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. There is a large wooden door at the very back that is secured with a metal latch. The door easily removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven movement produced by "Regula" and bearing the Albert Schwab name. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, cuckoo, animation, and musical activities. The whistle or bellow tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door to the right above the dial and stands in the doorway. The bird gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside the case and as he does, the two carved birds above the nest rock back and forth as if tending to the family nest. When the colorful bird is finished with his rounds, he returns to the safe confines of the clock, closing the door behind him. At the top of each hour, the bird appears again and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock and again, the parents rock back and forth as if fluttering around their nest. When the cuckoo bird is safely inside the clock, the small door to the left above the dial opens and a colorful man holding a zither in his lap appears in the doorway. At the same time, a high quality Swiss music box inside the case plays a heavenly rendition of Edelweiss, my favorite tune from the Sound of Music. When the music is finished, the man retreats back inside the clock and closes the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! I've looked the clock over fairly well and find very few signs of use, no damage, and no missing parts. The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, animates well, cuckoos as it should, and the music is very nice too! It is most impressive and a great example of old style Black Forest carving. It is gorgeous on display and the perfect size too measuring about 11" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 8" or so across the top. Even though it looks fairly new and works quite well here, it is an old clock and we don't know the service history. However, the mechanical movement does show signs of good maintenance. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We often recommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocks serviced at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classic clock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is in a class all by itself and is certain to be the focal point of any collection and is one of the finest ever created. Any guests in your home or office will be more than pleased to see and hear this rare German timepiece in action. Bid with confidence; I know you'll love this clock!
