Main Description This exceptional antique George III sterling silver sugar caster has a plain baluster shaped form onto a circular domed foot. The surface of the sugar caster is embellished with chased floral and foliate decoration accented with an applied moulded border to the bulbous portion in addition to the rim. The decoration to the body incorporates a large scrolling leaf bordered shaped cartouche displaying the contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a boar's head This silver caster retains the original hallmarked push fit cover, embellished with alternating panels of chased floral designs and pierced stylised scrolling leaf decoration. The cover is surmounted with an impressive sterling silver bud shaped finial accented with bands of bead decoration in a subtle swirl design. The maker of this impressive piece was unregistered and is therefore unidentifiable. Condition This antique sugar caster is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The chased decoration is all very sharp and the bright cut engraved crest is crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the caster and part hallmarks, consisting of maker's mark and lion passant, to the sleeve of the cover are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Georgian silverware.
