A very uncommon design! This tile was created by the, "Steele & Wood Tile Company," of, Stoke Upon Trent, Staffordshire, which was established in 1874 and ceased operations in 1892. Very little is known about Steele & Wood, who seemed to have made transfer printed, dust-pressed, tiles, and thin encaustic tiles, meant primarily for use in fireplaces, rather than floors. Steele & Wood supplied contemporary English iron-founders with tiles for their fireplace products. Companies located in Norwich, such as Barnard, and Bishop, used Steele & Wood tiles to decorate their Arts and Crafts style, cast-iron, fireplaces. As a result, most all presently existing Steele & Wood tiles have been recovered from their use as decorative fireplace tiles for coal-burning, English fireplaces. Condition: Excellent This tile displays no wear to its expertly printed design and the tile biscuit is without chips, with square corners. The verso grip pattern matches one of two recognized patterns used by Steele & Wood for their tiles, which are almost certainly blanks purchased from another tile manufacturer and then decorated. Thus, this pattern has been mistakenly identified as being from various companies, such as Wedgwood, W.B. Simpson, and even one of the Minton companies. However, only Steele & Wood would have placed this design on the unmarked blanks it is found upon. Please examine our provided high-resolution scans of this historical tile to determine its exact state and condition.
