An original antique map of STAFFORDSHIRE (Stafford Countie and Towne) by John Speed. The map was first published in Speed's Theatre of the Empire in 1611 . This example is the Bassett & Chiswell edition of 1676. The map is mounted but unframed with a printed area of approximately 510x390mm and later hand colour. It includes an elaborately scrolled title cartouche, three coats-of-arms (the arms of Viscount Howard were added for this edition), a mileage scale, the boundaries and names of the hundreds and inset town plans of Stafford and Lichfield.  Other features include towns (e.g. Stafford, Lichfield, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Walsall, Newcastle, Uttoxeter etc.), villages, estates, hills and battles (Blore Heath is marked and the battle described in some detail). This is a superbly detailed map; aesthetically one of Speed's best; and is in excellent condition.  NB to reduce postage costs the map will be posted out-of-mount.  Check out my other items !
