Seller: charlie-farlie (3.491) 100%, Location: Stowmarket, Ships to: GB, Item: 254488843616 It is my husband's wish that I continue to overhaul, list and sell our personal collection of Smiths and other makes of clocks on his behalf, in the same tradition as he has done for many years. The quality of my work meets with the very strict standards of my horological qualifications, and as such I would not deliberately mislead anyone into thinking that any clock we offer for sale is anything other than an honest, original and genuine clock with the historical integrity kept intact (as far as possible), or that we give the impression that the clock is something that it clearly isn’t. This listing is open to UK buyers only. Sorry, there are no exceptions to this. Please read my notes at the end of the listing. Ladies and gentlemen, it gives us great pleasure to present for your perusal a stunning Smiths 8 day Westminster chiming mantel clock in a rich oak case. I offer you the RTN 5312 dated to 1954. This model started life in 1950 as the Grimshaw, Baxter & J.J. Elliott model R139 and was fitted with an Enfield back hammer type movement. (We have one in our collection). This was later altered to the G,B&E model 5312 and fitted with the Smiths Enfield K3A underslung five hammer movement. The model number of 5312 was retained when it appeared in the Richard & Tucker Nunn catalogues. The model numbers of most G,B&E clocks began with “53” or “63” and remained numbered like that until the inception of the RTN catalogues. Despite having quite a lengthy production run, this is not a model that is seen very often but it would not be wise for me to suggest that very few remain as it is impossible to say and I wouldn’t want to mislead a buyer into thinking that it was rarer than it really is!! In January 1959, Richard & Tucker Nunn (RTN) merged with Grimshaw, Baxter and J.J Elliott to form the company of Tucker Nunn and Grimshaws (TNG). This company was founded by George Walter Nunn and was a subsidiary of, and totally owned by Smiths Industries. George Nunn was the driving force behind TNG but the day to day running of the company was in the hands of the general manager, Frederick Kienzler. Clocks with GB&E, RTN or TNG cases were designed for the “higher echelons” and more affluent members of society with a larger disposable income that required a more “individual” clock than an example from the General Smiths catalogue. They are very highly sought after by collectors in today's market and they have a following in their own right. They were renowned for their higher quality cases, although they used the same movements as their normal Smiths counterparts. The rich dark oak case has very traditional styling with a high rounded top and a very gentle sweep, leading to straight panelled sides. To the front, the lower portion of the case has a different cut of veneer to give the impression that the top of the clock is sitting in a cradle. This highlights the superb skills of the English case makers in the 1950s. Along the base, a bobbin turned moulding rests gently on the tip of each foot. These feet are superbly styled and chamfered running the full depth of the case, protruding slightly to the front and sides of the case. Considering the clock is sixty six years old, the case is in remarkable condition with no imperfections to mention. I have given it a good clean and I have applied four coats of a top quality wax polish that is specially formulated by a French polisher. It has not been “prettied up” for the camera and it does not shine more now than it did when it left the factory. The "vital statistics" for this excellent example are 11.5" wide by 9" tall by 4.5" deep. The movement is the popular K6A Westminster chiming unit, dated to June 1954. I have completely stripped the movement (please see the pictures) and ultrasonically cleaned it, using the very best fluids to obtain the very best results. I inspected the movement for wear and I found a total of five bushes that had varying degrees of wear, so I replaced these using traditional and time honoured methods, making their appearance virtually invisible. These bushes were the cam wheel bush in the chiming train and the gathering pallet wheel bush in the striking train on the front plate, followed by the intermediate wheel bush and the third wheel bush in the time train and the intermediate wheel bush in the striking train on the rear plate. No previous bush replacement had ever been undertaken and none will be needed for many years to come. (Any bush replacement is a good indication that the clock has been well used, loved and enjoyed over the years, and as a qualified horologist I would never try to mislead anyone into believing that this clock had spent most of its life stored in a cupboard, sitting idle since it was built). While the entire movement is now in excellent condition, it had obviously done sufficient work to wear out five bushes! I then polished all of the bushes and pivots using traditional and time honoured methods. Once I had completed this work, I fitted three brand new stainless steel pattern replacement mainsprings and I reassembled, aligned, tested and lubricated the movement. I am using the very highest quality and finest grades of horological oils in my overhauls. This intensive treatment should provide the new owner with accuracy and reliability for many years to come. Since I completed this overhaul in March 2019, the clock has performed without fault and keeping superb time. It chimes every 15 minutes with four notes at quarter past, eight notes at half past, twelve notes at quarter to and sixteen notes on the hour, followed by an hour count. This is performed on four finely tuned chime bars. A chime/silent lever is available beside the no: 9 to provide the option of silencing the chimes, should you wish to do so. It goes without saying that this superb clock will be supplied with its original key, pendulum and my comprehensive instruction sheet to enable the simple task of commissioning after delivery to be as effortless as possible for the new owner. I will also include a photocopy of the original Smiths instructions. The dial consists of a skeletonised gold coloured Arabic numerated chapter ring, set against the oak backdrop of the case. I have replaced the badly discoloured insert behind the chapter ring. The glass is housed in a brass bezel that is in superb order with no pitting. There is no "drop" to the hinge when opened and a strong clasp holds it firmly closed. The image is completed with finely shaped and pierced gold coloured hands. This is, without any doubt, a relatively rare and stunning clock that will form the focal point in any setting. It has a soothing tick and melodious chimes which will make this fine clock a welcome addition to any home or collection. Notes This listing is open to UK buyers only. Sorry, there are no exceptions to this!! Please note that we do NOT use the eBay Global shipping programme. Some of our customers have a copy of a book called Smiths Domestic Clocks by the late Barrie Smith. In this book, some of Barrie’s dating differs to the dating in our listings. This is an excellent book for identifying and giving a rough guide to the dates of clocks but the book is just that, a rough guide, and a percentage of the dates in the book are incorrect. In the interests of accuracy, I date my clocks using original Smiths catalogues and other available documentation. Some time ago I fully completed my training as an horologist, just like my husband did many years ago. His verbal instruction and endless encouragement helped me proudly achieve this coveted standard, and I am indebted to him. Due to deterioration in my husband’s health, I can no longer offer collection in person as an option. Whenever possible, your clock will be securely wrapped in brand new bubble wrap and sent out in a brand new, double walled box and despatched with a 24 hour courier FREE OF CHARGE within one day of receiving payment. A tracking number is always provided and the parcel will need to be signed for upon receipt. Please note that I book my couriers through Parcel2Go. They require a phone number BEFORE I can make the booking. I would therefore be very grateful if you could provide this when completing checkout. Please also note that it is not always possible for the couriers to provide a next day delivery to customers in all locations, especially in Scotland, Northern Ireland or outside the mainland UK. Most of the clocks that I offer for sale are a minimum of 50 years old and by their very nature will have the odd minor marks here and there that would be totally commensurate with their age. I will always point out anything untoward and while I always provide several photographs in the description, I am always happy to provide more images should you require them. I can always be contacted by e-mail, phone or Skype should you encounter any problems either with the setting up or at any time in the future. I will always be delighted to assist you in any way I possibly can. So please bid with total confidence and you can rest assured of the very best in after care service should you ever need it.
