A beautiful large antique Copper charger after “The Temperance Basin “ most likely by Elkingon & Co. embossed with ovolo rim and a border chased with eight cartouches depicting Minerva and the seven Liberal Arts. The centre has a cast medallion depicting Temperance holding a wine cup and ewer , surrounded by the four classical elements .
It’s in superb original condition with a lovely colour and patina, measuring approximately 46cm or 18 1/4” wide. The Temperance Basin is one of the most copied artworks from the Renaissance period , the original being designed around 1585. Of note is also its link to Tennis fame ,a version of this piece is the trophy presented every year to the winner of Wimbledon Ladies Singles Championships made by Elkington.
Please note his example is an original antique made from solid copper , the lighting in some pictures do make it appear to be silver plated and it may well have been when new , but decades of cleaning have now left it being 100% copper now.
