St Benedict Nursia Medal Pendant Unisex Necklace - Patron Saint of Europe - UK Stock

St Benedict - Patron Saint of Europe

This is a gold and silver coloured pendant necklace featuring St Benedict. On the front, it bears a picture of St Benedict holding the Holy Rule in his left hand and a cross in his right and around this image is the Latin inscription "Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur" which translates as "May we, at our death, be fortified by His presence".

On the reverse of the medal is a cross with the initials CSSML on the vertical bar which signify "Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux" (translation is "May the Holy Cross be my light"). On the horizontal bar of the cross are the initials NDSMD which stand for "Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux" - translated as "Let not the dragon be my overlord". There are also 4 letters, each in a circle, around the cross. These initials are CSPB and stand for "Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti" or "The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict".

On the outside of the reverse of the medal are the initials VRSNSMV which stand for "Vade Retro Satana, Nonquam Suade Mihi Vana" ("Begone Satan, do not suggest to me thy vanities") then the initials SMQLIVB which are the abbreviation of "Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas" ("Evil are the things thou profferest, drink thou thy own poison").

So, as you can tell, there's a lot of detail in this medal and it's true to the design of the medal that was first struck in 1880 to commemorate fourteenth centenary of Saint Benedict's birth, although the design itself can be dated back to around 1647.

St Benedict was responsible for the early rules of monasteries - these have been influencing how monasteries are run for over 1,400 years and monks across the world have been following his rules.

The pendant measures approximately 28mm in diameter (just over an inch) and weighs around 22 grams (just under an ounce) including the adjustable necklace.
