FEATURES:
Description:
This collection of Sherlock Holmes mysteries
stars one of the most beloved Holmes figures, Jeremy Brett, with
David Burke as his trusty assistant Dr. Watson. Included here are
all 41 episodes from the much loved 1980's & 1990's television series THE
ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.
Review:
By Mr. A. Whiteside (uk)
For me, Jeremy Brett was the definitive Sherlock Holmes and this
fabulous box set shows just how good he was as the legendary
detective. He appeared in four series for Granada Television and
every episode is included in this 16 disc set. All of the feature
length movies are also on show and though I prefer the shorter
episodes, it is good to have everything in one collection.
The discs come in an attractive and reasonably compact box and there
is a full episode listing on the back of the two cases. The picture
looks pretty sharp from what I have seen so far and the sound is in
mono or stereo. There are no extras to speak of which is a pity but
there are English subtitles for the hard of hearing. It is hard to
find any fault with this latest release and it is well worth five
stars.
I suppose that many of you will have their own favourite episodes
but in general the quality of the stories is very good and this is
television drama at a high level. It is sad to see the obvious
struggles with his health that Jeremy Brett had while watching 'The
Memoirs Of Sherlock Holmes' but he was always extremely watch-able
and even unpredictable. He got the role of a lifetime and did a
superb job and you can't ask for any more than that. Although I also
own an earlier release of the complete collection, this is the best
one yet as the picture seems better and it is highly recommended.

Background:
The programme adapted 42 of the original stories in 41
episodes, with 36 running for 50 minutes (in a one-hour
timeslot), and five being feature-length specials.
In addition to Brett, Burke and Hardwicke, other regular
cast members included Rosalie Williams as housekeeper
Mrs. Hudson and Colin Jeavons as Inspector Lestrade of
Scotland Yard. Also appearing in several episodes was
Charles Gray as Holmes' brother Mycroft Holmes (who
played the same character in the 1976 film The
Seven-Per-Cent Solution), and Eric Porter portrayed
Holmes' nemesis Professor Moriarty in the second series
of Adventures. The role of the servant Joe Barnes who
impersonates Lady Beatrice in the 1991 episode The
Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place was played by Jude Law,
who later played Dr. Watson in the 2009 film Sherlock
Holmes and its 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of
Shadows.
The series came to an end owing to the death of Brett at
the age of 61 from heart failure in 1995. It has,
however, been reported that by that stage he had already
decided not to play the role of Holmes again – he had
been gravely ill during the making of the final run of
the series, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, and even
collapsed on set during the making of one episode.
The series possibly presents the most faithful screen
adaptations of many of the Holmes stories, although
liberties were taken with some plotlines and characters,
particularly later in the run during the 1990s episodes.
A big change was Holmes quitting his cocaine habit in
the episode "The Devil's Foot," which was done at the
approval of Conan Doyle's daughter when it was
discovered that the series had a considerable child
audience. Nonetheless, the series has been highly
praised for its star, its adherence to Doyle's original
concept in the characterisation of Watson, its high
production values and close attention to period detail.
