Václav Kučera (1929 -  2017) Czech composer and musicologist

Kucera studied musicology and aesthetics at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University and took private piano lessons with František Maxián and studied composition with Miroslav Krejčí . After three years in Prague, he continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory, composition studies with Vissarion  Shebalin and musicology. His graduation composition was a ballet called Zbojnicky Fire and his diploma thesis on musicology was written on the theme of Leos Janacek and Moravian Folk Music Culture.

In 1956 he returned to Prague and worked as an editor in the main office of the Czechoslovak Radio. In  1959 he became the Scientific Secretary of the department for the Study of Contemporary Music at the Union of Czechoslovak Composers . In 1962, the Institute of Musicology was founded at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and Kučera became his researcher.  From 1969 to 1983 he was also the chief secretary of the Union of Czech Composers and Concert Artists.  Since 1973 he has taught at the Department of Composition at the Music Faculty Academy of Performing Arts in the modern composition area.  He lectured briefly in the United States at New York University and at Boston University on the Principles of Contemporary Music in Czechoslovakia.

In 1988 he was appointed professor of music composition at HAMU. He was also Vice-Dean for four years. In 1997 he began to teach  at the Department of Musicology of the Faculty of Arts of Palacký University in Olomouc .

His compositions have been awarded a number of our and foreign awards; Queen Marie-José Prize for the composition Picture for Piano and Large Orchestra (Geneva 197O), Prix ​​d'Italia for the musical dramatic fresco Lidice (Italian Radio 1972), 1st Prize in the Competition of Choral Works of the RIA for the Children's Choir Series We Sing About Spring (Prague 1977), Prize of the Union of Czech Composers and Concert Artists for String Quartet of Consciousness of Connections (Prague 1983), Czechoslovak Radio Prize for Spartacus (Prague 1977), 3rd Prize in the Cori di Trentino International Choir Competition for Children's Choir Son tre noti che non dormo (1995), Gran Canaria Municipalidad Award for Esta noche (2002)
