Two brass screw topped inkwells, book slope rest, three hidden draws, large side drawer, and an internal lock and key. Circa 1820. It has a Bramah stile lock but there isn't a key. It does however have the original lock and key which unlocks the upper internal flap. It has had a new antique red leather skiver fitted which is similar to the original worn one, with gold and blind tooling. On the reverse side of the upper flap there is a criss crooss arrangement of red ribbon, held in place with dome top brass pins. Again, the ribbon has been replaced. Towards the top end is a central pen tray, a nib tray to the right and a small lidded compartment to the left. In each corner, are the inkwells. To access the hidden drawers, the divider between the right inkwell and the nib tray, needs to be pulled upwards. A sprung timber section is then released, as shown in the photos. The mahogany book rest is housed underneath the bottom flap, where it is neatly held in the centre section via its two brass pins. It can be removed when require, and it the brass locate into two small holes at the edge of the box. On each side, there is a brass campaign stile handle which folds back flush. One of these is located on the side drawer. This can only be withdrawn after removing a large brass pin, accessed when the box is open. It has been carefully cleaned and restored. A small section of the brass inlay has needed some restoration and it is again in overall excellent condition, with good colour and patina. Measurements: 52 cm wide, 28 cm deep and 20 cm high. Aftercare: Cleaned and restored to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. You can occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
