Here on offer is a very rare antique Terry’s of York Goldray chocolate assortment box dating to 1932/33.

Terry's of York is a well-known British chocolate and confectionary brand. The company was founded in 1767 in York and was part of the city's famous confectionery triumvirate along with Rowntree’s and Cravens. The headquarters and factory, Terry’s Chocolate Works, was closed in 2005 and production moved to Kraft factories in Europe. The business returned to the UK in 2019 as Terry's Chocolate Co  located in London.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Terry's launched some very fancy packaging, which the company's 1930 product catalogue stated, The purchaser of today expects a chocolate box to be worthy of the confections it contains – in distinction of design and harmony of colours, it must reflect the quality of the chocolates within. Their best known products include Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Terry’s All Gold box of assorted chocolates which were both introduced in the 1930s.

This is a box from this very early production and embodies the companies philosophy. The second picture is a photograph of a page from the first catalogue, at the top is an illustration of the box being offered here, the catalogue page is not included. This example has the original label on the base, it reads:

On the inner lid the original ‘Terry’s of York’ label remains in place. I believe that this is the earlier name for Terry’s All Gold chocolate assortment.

 

The box is covered in a dark gold textured paper with a stylised floral design printed in red, green, blue and brown. The interior has a plain textured gold paper lining. The box has an open upper section with two drawers below.

 

The box is offered in good antique condition, Considering that this box is 90 years old, it has remarkably little wear and damage, please study the photos. It measures approx. 23.9cm by 11.8cm by 7cm.

 

This is an incredibly scarce box, a must for a serious collector.
