Seller: signednumbered (1.367) 100%, Location: Ipswich, Massachusetts, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 233214515646 One of the most important artists in Japan specializing in the making of color woodblock prints during the first half of the 20th century, Ohara Koson (also known as Shoson) lived from 1877 to 1945 and created images that typically featured animals and birds in their natural settings. This superb original color woodblock print by Koson, titled "Carrion Crow on a Snow-Covered Branch at Dawn", dates from around 1930 and is generally regarded as one of his greatest achievements. This image is included in the 2001 volume "Crows, Cranes and Camellias: The Natural World of Ohara Koson, 1877-1945", the first full length study in English of Koson's work. Our woodblock print measures 14 9/16 inches by 6 5/8 inches (image size) and is printed on a sheet measuring a total of 14 15/16 inches by 6 3/4 inches. The work is signed and sealed Shoson at the bottom right, and was published by Watanabe Shozaburo. On the reverse of the sheet, there is the stamp "Made on Japan" at the bottom, which appears on prints published by Watanabe. This print is in excellent condition, with no rips, tears or foxing. There is also virtually no time toning to the sheet. It is not laid down, and is attached to its original backing board at the top two corners of the sheet. We are offering this masterpiece by one of Japan's most significant "Shin-hanga" ("new print") artists with an attractive opening bid and with no reserve, in the expectation that it will achieve its appropriate value. On May-02-19 at 04:55:59 PDT, seller added the following information: Please note: We have just noticed some fading to the orange color in this print, presumably due to exposure to light over the years. Nevertheless, it remains a very appealing and desirable example of Koson's work. Condition: Excellent, Region of Origin: Japan, Age: 1900-1940, Primary Material: Paper, Maker: Ohara Koson, Original/Reproduction: Antique Original, Color: Multi-Color
