Rare & important woven damask textile designed by Dr Christopher Dresser and almost certainly manufactured by John Wilson, New Bond St, London, circa 1890. This is a wonderful dynamic design composed of birds, fish, bulrushes, Egyptian frets and borders. Realised in Dresser's highly original, idiosyncratic stylisation, somewhat akin to his more extreme Minton and Wedgwood decoration. Wide patterned borders with a large central reserve decorated panel.   I gather John Wilson produced Dresser's designs for damask tablecloths from around 1890, although only one design is known to be illustrated and credited by them to him, in the Art Journal, 1891 (see Christopher Dresser: A Pioneer of Modern Design, Halen, Vidar and Christopher Dresser The People's Designer Lyons, Harry for more extensive information on this). Wilson continued to advertise selling Dresser's designs for Damask until circa 1910. The overall dimensions of the textile are aprox. 70 x 84 inches. There are three original selvedges, the fourth has been cut and hemmed, so I presume that this was a longer cloth, that's been made smaller at some point in it's history. There are three full borders and the whole of the central decorative panel. Good condition overall, but showing some signs of wear and use. This is a retired textile that's had a life. There is one hole located at the cut and hemmed edge (aprox. 1cm ) and a few small weak areas located throughout. Embroidered owners monogram to one corner of the central reserve. A few light yellow stains and some tiny iron marks. It's a remarkable survivor that overall presents well.
