For sale is this exceptionally rare and unique coverlet circa 1750. This is the first time this is offered on the open market, and it came from the Los Angles estate of a rare textile collector who purchased it many years ago at a European flea market.   After extensive search I have been unable to find a comparable piece, and the closest textiles are hand painted Chinoiserie dresses from the same time period found in European and American museums. This exquisite textile was assessed in person by curators at LACMA Museum, and here in their own words is the assessment of the piece: *It appears to be made of European silk, painted and embroidered in Europe. The selvedge widths, type of silk (moire), paint characteristics (not opaque, but more water-based/washes of pigment), and painting and embroidery style all point to a European (possibly English, possibly continental) origin. *The embroidery is primarily couched metal strip and metal-wrapped thread (around a silk core). The couching is done with silk thread, and the metal is a silver alloy (tarnished). *It did appear that the very edges of the coverlet had been cut away at some point in time. It is in good condition otherwise, with water spots to the moire, and loss/damage to the metallic embroidery, but overall the paint looks minimally faded or abraded. *A mid-18th century date attribution is appropriate. It was certainly made with knowledge of and in emulation of Chinese export textiles. The silk background of the coverlet is strong and there is a great deal of metal embroidery still intact.  There is some embroidery loss, especially along the intricate outer border, an old repair on one side, and some water staining as previously mentioned.  However, this is absolutely stunning displayed and is a decorative and well balanced design, with obvious skill and care taken in its making. It is also very large consisting of silk sections of 21" widths with a blue and white selvage, consistent with 18th century European looms.  The total size is 74" x 77" I have many more photos available upon request.
