A Bit Of Viz Trivia...
Initially created and Edited by Chris Donald from his bedroom at his parents home in Jesmond (a suburb of Newcastle Upon Tyne) with the help of his brother Simon and friend Jim Brownlow, the story of Viz's rise to Adult Comic domination from the very early, very small, print runs to becoming the 3rd highest selling magazine in the UK by the mid nineties (trailing only slightly behind the TV Times & Radio Times) is the stuff of legend!
The first Twelve issues were mainly sold in and around Newcastle and the North East, with the KARD BAR (Cross Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne) the very first store to stock and sell these early issues across the counter.
Viz became a Bi-Monthly periodical in August 1985, with Issue #13 being the first to be published by Virgin Books and distributed nationally. In April 1987, from issue #23, John Brown Publishing Ltd. took over production which saw circulation finally top the 100,000 mark! By the mid nineties - Viz's heyday - this had grown exponentially to 1.2million!!
