All from the estate of an affluent European woman with noble Romanian lineage! Today we are delighted to offer for sale a rare antique French portrait of an 18th century noblewoman in a bronze ormolu frame! This fabulous piece is intricately and expertly crafted and detailed. The cartouche-shaped frame features extensive three-dimensional detailing, with an outer layer composed of symmetrical floral garland rocaille cascading-flower ornamentation adorned with flying putti and neoclassical fire arrows tied with ribbon at the bottom. The top is crowned by a big flowing ribbon bow. The frame features a repousse ormolu background featuring a repeating Fleur-de-Lys pattern. The Fleur-de-Lys is one of the symbols of the Bourbon royal dynasty. The portrait features an oval-shaped inner frame covered with slightly-curved glass. The back of the frame is covered in antique gold silk and features a hanging loop. The portrait is masterfully designed and executed and depicts a noblewoman from the Louis XVI period, thought to be the Princesse de Lamballe. Princess Marie-Louise Thérèse of Savoy-Carignan (8 September 1749 – 3 September 1792) was a member of a cadet branch of the House of Savoy. She was married at the age of 17 to Louis Alexandre de Bourbon-Penthièvre, Prince de Lamballe, the heir to the greatest fortune in France. After her marriage, which lasted a year, she went to court and became the confidante of Queen Marie Antoinette. She was killed in the massacres of September 1792 during the French Revolution. The painting, executed on bone (or other similar natural material), is oval-shaped and intricately and expertly hand-painted. It depicts a stunning late 18th century Louis XVI-era French noblewoman wearing a low decolletage Chemise à la Reine trimmed with fine lace. The chemise, worn without panniers and with a high waistline, was first worn by women in warmer climates in the colonies and was popularized amongst the aristocracy through Queen Marie Antoinette at her rustic retreat in the park of the Château de Versailles. The young noblewoman has a pale alabaster visage with rosy cheeks and long cascading powdered wig topped with a simple straw hat adorned with lovely pink roses. The portrait is signed on the mid left "Mad. Jardy" . The portrait presents well and is in very good antique as-found condition, with very minor display wear and patina commensurate with age. Frame has very minor wear/tarnish and patina commensurate with age. Add Ancien Régime refinement and elegance to any fine miniature portraiture collection with this precious piece...Fresh to the market!
