The finest in hand-painted gilding and details~ a masterpiece! DESCRIPTION: We are pleased to be offering this magnificent 19th c. Antique Japanese Satsuma Censer / Incense Burner. Furthermore, the Japanese Satsuma Earthenware Censer/Incense Burner is encircled with haloed sages, rakans (enlightened beings) immortals (all wearing finely gilded and detailed kimonos). The piece is one of the finest and highly detailed examples of Japanese Satsuma censers / incense burners with stunning raised gilt work and amazing intricate decorative features. The Censer/Incense Burner is encircled by a repeated sublime pictorial scene (and/or various vignettes) depicting the holy ones with scrolls, tiny golden blades, walking canes, fans, braziers, and numerous other detailed appurtenances. The design is both creatively artistic and finely technical, with perfectly painted and designed brocades surrounding the overlapping figural storied scenes (or ornamented with designs representing scenes from the haloed sages or enlightened beings). The more one looks, the more the piece reveals itself (see pictures for all of the exquisite detail). The Censer/Incense Burner is finished with extraordinary, elaborate raised gilding which highlights minutely detailed and varied patterning of the kimonos and shining haloes. In excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks (see pictures). Must have taken numerous hours of concentrated hand painting to produce, then been carefully stored by the fortunate owners for over 100 years. These Meiji period (circa 1800’s) satsuma pieces are painted with polychrome enamels embellished with gold. Elaborate pictorial design with intricate details and beautiful coloration with gold accents. Artist Signed with the gilt marks, as well as the Shimazu crest on the underside of the piece. A true masterwork representing the pinnacle of Japan's Meiji era Satsuma ware. An exquisite and rare centerpiece for the discriminating collector of fine Japanese antiques.
