Item:174224099734Rare example of a high quality, Black Forest Mantel Clock dating from the mid 19th century. The heavy wooden case is well-made and veneered in walnut onto a pine carcase with a double border, brass line, decorative inlay on each of the rectangular front case panels (see photographs); it has an opening, hinged side door, a detachable back to the case and the front bezel is a hinged brass one which lifts off its latch to open. The matched pair of hands are open trefoil in style. The condition of the clock is original in terms of case finish, dial paint, hands, pendulum and key. The only characteristic marking is a number '5' stamped onto the bottom of the clock back plate and repairer's date marks (see photos of backboard) for 16/9/79, 29/11/81, 10/4/85 (could be 19th or 20th century) & 3/4/34 (20th century). The movement is a quality one, similar to Vienna-type quality in its construction It is very unusual in design with solid plates, barrel mainsprings and 3 separate wheel trains: time, strike and alarm; all winding through the dial from the front. The alarm is set by a front dial mounted brass disc and operates a hammer hitting a copper bell mounted above the movement and the count plate strike (the count plate can be seen in the photos on the back plate) is onto a gong mounted on the backboard. The pendulum is made of solid brass. All 3 mainsprings are good and all three wheel trains (time, strike and alarm) work. When wound, and the pendulum is hooked on, the clock goes. This is an antique clock and I therefore cannot guarantee it and advise that it will need to be levelled and set up correctly by a competent clock person.Condition:Antique; original case finish, dial paint and key. All 3 mainsprings are functional and all three wheel trains are working., Age:19th Century, Material:Walnut-veneered case with brass line inlay, Features:8-Day, Clock Type:Mantel Clock, Style/ Origin/ Theme:Black Forest area
