The subjects of Hiroshige’s work were atypical of the ukiyo-e genre. Most artists of his time focused on beautiful women, popular actors or scenes of the yoshiwara, the pleasure districts of the Edo period, 1603-1868. However, Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes and images of birds and flowers. In fact Hiroshige’s genius for landscape composition was even recognized, and sometimes copied, by the great European Impressionist painters such as Vincent Van Gogh. Over one hundred twenty five years ago, in 1892, just 34 years after Hiroshige’s death, the great woodblock print studio of Kodama Matashichi published a limited collection of Hiroshige’s finest works from his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. These prints are very beautifully detailed with soft shading and fine line work and are rarely found on today’s market. We very fortunate to have this extraordinary print from that collection to offer astute collectors. This masterwork is from Hiroshige’s famous series “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.” It was designed c. 1856-1858 during the Edo period. This release is from the much sought-after 1892 Kodama Matashichi edition. The title is “View from Massaki of Suijin Shrine, Uchigawa Inlet, and Sekiya.” The view is from a circular second floor window of one of the teahouses in Massaki on the west side of the Sumida River. The Suijin Shrine is just visible in the grove of trees to the right. In the distance are the Uchigawa Inlet, the Sekiya plains and the twin peaks of Mount Tsukuba. This image is considered the most artistic work of the series and is one of the most famous of all ukiyo-e art. It is a wonderful opportunity for the antique print collector or interior decorator and would be striking displayed on your home or office wall. Hiroshige’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the British Museum, London; the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia; as well as the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo.
