As I have edited every page of every manual to remove blemishes and scanning problems, the images in these files  differ from the original manuals. My changes are all copyright 2004-2020. Permission is given for personal, educational, and research use only. Each manual was scanned at 300 or 600 lines per inch, then hand-edited in Photoshop to eliminate as many marks and stains as possible. Large fold-out diagrams have been scanned on a large-format scanner and are complete, single images (rather than sequences of small 8.5x11 images that you sometimes see). These are not your Grandmother's scans. Special care has been taken with the half-tone images to make sure that all the detail and depth of the originals is preserved. Some amount of color-correction has been applied to the color prints, although I wasn't able to always get the colors perfect due to yellowing of the pages or fading of the inks. All the manuals are for guns that were in piston-engine military aircraft - no jets - and are generally from WWII-era airplanes. The B-29 introduced a fully remote-control aiming and firing system and has a separate section. Some information on fighter guns is also included. The manuals have been indexed by OCR for easy searching. Look for "charging" and you will pop up all the gun charging systems in all the manuals. These are the individual manuals: "Handbook of Operation and Service Instructions for Gun Turrets Navy Numbers Aero 11A, Aero 11A-1, Aero 11A-2, Aero 11B", AAF Manual AN 11-45HD-1, 116 pages. "The Martin Upper Turret Models A-3, A-3-A, A-3-B, A-3-C, A-11", Briggs Manufacturing Company, September 18, 1943, 104p. Briggs was contracted to make the Martin Upper Turret for the B-24 bomber. Martin needed more manufacturing capacity, so it was contracted out to Briggs and others for replication. This is their own training manual. 3 related manuals "Handbook Service Instructions, Aircraft Tail Turret System, AERO 21B, AERO 21B-1, Pneumatic System 1JH7226G1 (Westinghouse Electric)", NAVAER 11-45-529, 15 December 1958, 22 pages, and "Handbook Overhaul Instructions, Aircraft Tail Turret System AERO 21B, AERO 21B-1, Pneumatic System 1JH7226G1", NAVWEPS 11-45-530, 15 March 1960, 34 pages (looks like a later edition of the first one) and "Illustrated Parts Breakdown Aircraft Tail Turret System, AERO 21B, AERO 21B-1, Pneumatic System 1JH7226G1 (Westinghouse Electric)", NAVAER 11-45-531, 15 February 1960, 19 pages. The Pneumatic gun chargers were used for cocking the Browning .50-caliber machine guns automatically. The AERO 21B turrets served as the tail guns of the Douglas A-3 "Skywarrior" bomber, among others. One of the manuals (529) has a bite taken out of the bottom-left corner of the first few pages. Bummer! "Handbook of Operations and Service Instructions, Upper Gun Turret, Type A9B", AAF Manual AN 11-45A-9, 1 June, 1944, Revised 15 July, 1944, 52p. This is an early version of the Bendix Model R upper turret as used on the B-24 bomber. "Upper Local Turret Models A-1, A-1-A", Briggs Manufacturing Company, July 19, 1943, 85p. This is the same as the "Sperry Upper Local Turret" as used on the B-17 Flying Fortress. Briggs was contracted to manufacture the Sperry turret for additional manufacturing capacity. This is the Briggs version of the manual for this turret. "Handbook of Operation, Service and Overhaul Instructions with Parts Catalog, Turret Model Vought 150CH-3, Vought 150CH-3A (Emerson)", AAF Manual AN 11-45HF-1, 1 December, 1945. This turret was used in the TBY-2 torpedo/bomb carrier aircraft. "Gunners' Information File" This is your gun, the Browning .50-caliber (the seven functional groups, field-stripping, operation and maintenance, gunsights) Sighting and sights (calibration, maintenance, use), Turrets (Martin Upper, Sperry Ball, Sperry Retractable Ball, Sperry Upper, Consolidated Tail, Emerson Nose, Bendix Chin, Bendix Upper). THIS MANUAL IS UNUSUAL - IT HAS THE CHAPTER ON AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION THAT IS USUALLY MISSING. IT ALSO HAS THE INDEX (ALSO USUALLY MISSING). IN ADDITION, IT HAS AN EXTRA SECTION THAT I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE ENTITLED "Gunnery in the B-29 - Instructions for the Remote-Control Turret System." THIS IS USUALLY ISSUED SEPARATELY AS AAF MANUAL NUMBER 27. "Aircrewman's Gunnery Manual". This is the Navy version of the above "Gunners' Information File". It has information on Navy fighter guns as well as the guns and gun turrets on the PBY-4 (the Navy version of the B-24). This manual is designated OPNAV 33-40 and NAVAER 00-80S-40, 1944, 330 pages. It has some sections that are word-for-word like the GIF above, but it has other sections where it describes a number of different guns, sights, mounts, and turrets that are not referenced in the GIF. Covers Grumman ball turrets, Erco tear-drop turrets, Martin ball turrets, and others. The gun mounts are the Mark 6, Mark 10 and Mark 11 (rather than the E-11 and E-12 in the GIF). It describes the gun sight Mark 18 which is not in the GIF. It does not have the aircraft recognition section. It only has the three sections on guns, sights, and turrets, but those three sections comprise 330 pages (they are only about 275 pages in the corresponding parts of the GIF). THIS MANUAL IS RARE. (note that these last two manuals are also found on my "Information Files" DVD-ROM that is also on eBay) "Fighter Gunnery", Army Air Forces Training Command, June, 1944, 120p. This is one of those full-color, cartoon-style training for fighter pilots. It introduces the basic concepts of bullet ballistics, leading the target, and so on. "Fighter Gun Harmonization", AAF Manual 200-1, 30 January, 1945, 44p. This short manual describes how to calibrate and aim (harmonize) the guns on various fighters, including the P-51, the P-38, and several others. "Gunnery in the B-29", AAF Manual No. 27, August 1944, 106p. The B-29 was the first bomber to use the GE remote-control system. Rather than putting your hands directly on the guns, you held a harness that had 3-axis sensors that aimed the guns, automatically correcting for wind speed, distance and speed of the target, and other factors. It was a very complex system for 40's technology. This manual goes over every stage of the process. "B-29 Gunners Information File", General Electric GEJ-1631, 80p. This is the GE training manual for the operating B-29 gun control system. It is in cartoon-style. "Handbook of Operations and Service Instructions, The Central Station Fire Control System, Model 2CFR55B1", AAF Manual T.O. 11-70A-1, 15 October, 1943, Revised 5 December, 1944, 780p with many really, really big fold-out pages of schematics. This is the detailed technical manual on the electronics of the "computer" used in the B-29 firing system. Boy, what a piece of engineering! "Preliminary Instructions, Operation, Service, and Overhaul, Computers Models 2CH1C1 and 2CH1D1 for the B-29 Airplane", General Electric manual GEI-18787, 15 June, 1944, 300p. This is an extremely detailed manual on the design and maintenance of the "computer" used in the B-29 fire control system. There are page after page of diagrams of gear trains and complicated mechanical systems that would have made Babbage proud.
