They are decorated in the traditional Ko Kutani style and marked on the base 九谷金栄堂瓢有画 , Kutani Kineido Hyoyu Ga. Which translates as Painted by Hyoyu from Kineido in Kutani, these vases date from the late 19th century during the Meiji period. The bodies of both vases are decorated in mirror image very fine detailed painting with fifteen scholars, some seated some standing each holding various Buddhistic emblems, on each vase there is also a central figure of a Buddha or Immortal with a golden head dress and Halo. The emblems held by the figures include a fan, scroll, vase, staff, ruyi sceptre, koro, lotus flower, fly whisk. They are all standing in a garden surrounded by cloud scrolls with several temples, rocks, trees and mountains in the background. The neck of the vases are decorated with two five clawed dragons chasing a flaming pearl. Both the top and bottom of each vase is further decorated with an intricate geometric elliptical floral pattern or brocade. The vases are each approximately 20 inches (50 cm)high, 9 1/2 inches (24cm) diameter at the widest and the base is 6 1/2 inches diameter. They each weigh 5.2kg unpacked and the two bases weigh a total 0.76kg. SEEGER on the 5 &6th March 2014 for £4,375 GBP.
