Dispatched with Royal Mail 2nd Class. .A GORGEOUS PIECE OF THE ART NOUVEAU MOVEMENT : OFFERED HERE ARE A PAIR OF LOVELY ART NOUVEAU FIRESIDE TILES, ORIGINAL PIECES FROM THE MID 1900's DECADE, circa 1905. IT WAS SALVAGED FROM A FIREPLACE IN A HOUSE ON ONE OF THE MANY ALEXANDRA ROADS. (AFTER THE VICTORIAN ERA, WHEN EDWARD V11 AND ALEXANDRA WERE ON THE THRONE, THERE WAS A PROGRAMME OF BUILDING LARGE, TERRACED FAMILY HOMES. NEARLY EVERY LARGE TOWN IN ENGLAND HAS AN ALEXANDRA ROAD LIKE THIS TO COMMEMORATE THE ROYAL COUPLE) THE TILES ARE A VERY HIGHLY GLAZED MAJOLICA, AND TYPICAL OF THE ORGANIC DESIGNS OF THIS PERIOD, THEY FEATURE A FLORAL PATTERN THAT IS A REPRESENTATION OF A WATER LILY. THE PETALS ARE A GOLDEN YELLOW WITH RED STAMENS. BELOW THIS ARE SYMMETRICAL LEAVES AND FROM EACH CARDINAL POINT A CURLY TENDRIL. THERE IS A BLUE BACKGROUND BEHIND THE FLOWER. THE REST OF THE TILE IS A CREAMY COLOUR WITH A GREENISH TINGE. THE FLORAL IMAGE IS RAISED SLIGHTLY PROUD FROM THE TILE SURFACE. NOT SURPRISINGLY FOR THE AGE AND ITS LOCATION BY A FIRE, THE GLAZE HAS CRAZING THROUGHOUT. SADLY THERE IS A HAIRLINE CRACK TO THE BOTTOM, LEFT-HAND CORNER OF ONE OF THE TILES, SO BASICALLY ITS BUYING ONE GOOD TILE WITH A FREE, DAMAGED SPARE. IF THEY WERE MOUNTED TOGETHER AND HUNG IN A FRAME THEY WOULD LOOK VERY GOOD, AND THE CRACK WOULDE NOT BE AN ISSUE. THEY HAVE BEEN SALVAGED FROM A FIREPLACE SURROUND AND BOTH TILES HAVE A CONSIDERABLE LAYER OF CEMENT ON THE BACKS. THIS CEMENT COVERS THE MAKERS MARK USUALLY FOUND ON THE BACK OF THE TILE AND GIVEN THE BRITTLE NATURE I HAVE NOT WANTED TO RISK CHIPPING ANY MORE OFF. ITS SUCH A SHAME AS THEY HAVE SUCH A QUALITY LOOK, THEY COULD BE FROM AN IMPORTANT MAKER?? EACH TILE IS 6'' OR 150mm SQUARE, AND WITH THE LAYER OF CEMENT, ARE JUST OVER 10mm WIDE. THE BEST ONE IS GOOD, HOWEVER THE ONE WITH THE CRACK ALSO HAS A COUPLE OF CHIPS TO THE EDGE. I TRY TO DESCRIBE ALL MY ITEMS AS ACCURATELY AS POSSIBLE AND ALWAYS POINT OUT ANY FLAWS. ALL ENQUIRIES WELCOME AND ANSWERED PROMPTLY. I AIM TO POST WITHIN 48 HOURS OF PAYMENT TAKING WEEKENDS INTO ACCOUNT. I USE RECYCLED PACKAGING AND AVOID PLASTIC WHEREVER POSSIBLE. I AM HAPPY TO SHIP TO OVERSEAS BUYERS, BUT PLEASE MESSAGE ME FOR POSTAL COSTS BEFORE BIDDING, AS THESE VARY TO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. MANY THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST. Pottery Technique: Majolica, Colour: Multi, Type: Fireplace Tile, Style: Art Nouveau, Material: Ceramic, Pattern: Floral, Decade: 1900s, Original/Reproduction: Antique Original, Features: Salvage
