ENGLAND SHEET 49 Small Scale map an inch to the mile This reprint first published 2003 These are the Alan Godfrey maps and have a wide reputation for good quality maps at a fantastic price. Quote from a well respected London Bookshop "Fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Selected towns in Great Britain and Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th…" This is a brand new black & white folded map taken from the famous OS "Inch to the Mile" Maps 49 as published in 1876 with railway revision to 1876. Though obviously far less detailed than the large scale maps for which we are perhaps better known, they provide an invaluable overview of a wider area, typically 18 miles across by 12 miles down. For transport historians they are invaluable for showing old railways, while all historians need them for their close depiction of topography, including parish boundaries. For the genealogist these maps are great as they are very detailed but a reasonable price. On the reverse is an introduction to the area together with a large scale plan of Beetham,. Coverage stretches from Grange eastward to Kirkby Lonsdale and the slopes of Gragareth, crossing the Lune and Kent valleys; and from Oxenholme station southward to just north of Carnforth. Beetham: Beetham Mill, Waterhouse Mill, Beetham House, Beetham Bridge, St Michaels Well, St Michaels Church, Grave Yard, Ashton House, Temple Bank on site of St Johns Chapel, River Beela, Beeham Hall, Pool Darkin Lane, Stanley Street, Whinscar Plantation, High Wood Edge, Low Wood Edge, Fieryhouse Wood, Fiery House, Slack Head, Longtail Wood, Wray. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Lindale, Tunstall, Warton, Whittington. Grange over Sands Beetham, Burton in Kendal, Heversham, Kirkby Lonsdale, Milnthorpe.
