SUSPENSION SPRINGS FOR FUSEE CLOCKS
1) 0.10mm (.0039") thickness, this is the remmended replacement, even if the original is 0.15mm. If you want no problems ... buy this one !! ... it is less likely to cause "rocking" of the suspension. If you do not understand the rocking problem or its implications, buy the 0.10mm suspension. All modern factory-made suspensions use 0.10mm spring steel 2) 0.15mm (.0060") thickness, this is a duplicate of the original 19thCent. suspension. You will buy this one only if you are a purist and very experienced clockmaker, but watch out for the "rocking" of the suspension that could even stop the clock. I would always advice to purchase the 0.10mm, regardless of the original suspension thickness.
Other Important Recommendations: A) If you find that the gap in the "chops" is too narrow for the suspension-block, it is advisable to thin down the suspension-block or file the chops' gap a bit wider ... do not try to bend the chops !! The chops are made of cast brass and are therefore very brittle, they are likely to break !! especially if they have been bent before. B) Unless you are very experienced, choose the 0.10mm suspension, even if the original is 0.15mm. It will work just fine and it is very un-likely to give you trouble Fitting procedure: Spring Steel is carbon steel, hardened and tempered to "straw"... that means that you will not be able to drill the bottom hole, as the metal is as hard or harder than a normal drill. You could use a carbide drill ... but I wish you Good Luck! with that method ... not easy. The standard practice: This is the procedure I advice ... but as I do not know your abilities or equipment, you do it at your own risk A) Hold the spring at the required length with pliers and bend the steel to break it B) Remove the pendulum bob, to make the job easier, then fit the spring in the rod slit ... (if the rod grips the spring, it will be easier and you get a better result) C) Place a steel pin in the pendulum rod hole and hammer the pin through to the other side. To avoid damages, please make sure that you support the pendulum rod on a stake or a solid base.
If you want to make your own suspensions or re-use your old suspension block, you can buy the steel strip on its own. Click the link below for a selection of thicknesses from 0.05mm to 0.50mm for all uses https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293454252256
