SS FRANCE FUNNEL Smokestack ASHTRAY

CGT/French Line

With its original Sticker!

S.S. FRANCE

A French-made, very distinctive glazed ceramic ashtray, souvenir made specifically by CGT for the S.S. "France" ca. 1962 --- One of the most recognizable features on this grand luxury ship were its two distinctive streamlined funnels or smokestacks.  Thus, this ashtray was a welcome and cherished souvenir of a First Class passenger who sailed to and fro on Atlantic crossings New York - Le Havre (and later on winter cruises to the Caribbean!).  These were given to First Class passengers and special guests, VIPs, Celebrities who traveled on the France paquebot ocean liner.

The red and black funnel rises from the greenish-blue and white body done in a Sixties populuxe boat-like form. The idea was to put your lit cigarette (or incense) inside the side opening (label side of the stack) and smoke rises up and out the side wings.

It still has its original foil paper label "LA CHEMINÉE QUI FUME" -- (translation "The Fireplace or Chimney that Smokes" ) and underneath is the maker location in molded raised lettering "FRANCE."  No maker name.

Appx  7" x 4.5" x 3.5"  No cracks or crazing.

Please note: Lighting makes lots of weird little reflections and glare that are NOT on the ashtray!!!  These are what to look for: One teeny fleabite on the very back of the red stack could easily be enameled.  There is a tiny scrape to the left of the faded foil label and a dark spot that appears to be surface and could be removable, but leave as is to new owner. One rough spot on the back left edge of the body appears to be from the manufacture, but not sure.  Otherwise a grand survivor six decades old!!

We gently wiped off the dust with a lightly dampened cloth to clean, so it should be ready to display, but we remind you if you wish to clean further, Do NOT immerse in water!!

Christies auction house sold one without its label last year for $345!!  One recently sold on eBay for $225!!!  French Line collectors, dont miss this one!!

From the Web:

SS France was a Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT, or The French Line) ocean liner, constructed by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard at Saint-Nazaire, France, and put into service in February 1962. At the time of her construction in 1960, the 316 m (1,037 ft) vessel was the longest passenger ship ever built, a record that remained unchallenged until the construction of the 345 m (1,132 ft) RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004.  It was considered the most beautiful paquebot / ship of its day, with cool, elegant, modern "Populuxe" Retro styling throughout.

---Even as she was launched, jet travel was becoming increasingly available and affordable to the public.  Costing outrageous amounts in fuel, the ship was subsidized by the French government almost right from the start.  Designed as a Paquebot Transatlantique or Transatlantic Ocean Liner, with indoor swimming pools and other amenities to suit cold Atlantic Ocean crossings, the France was not really suited to hot weather travel.  Nonetheless, almost immediately, CGT began offering Winter cruises from New York to various Caribbean ports, which were hugely successful. When France realized it could no longer afford to subsidize the costs, the beautiful ship was sold to NCL and transformed into the S.S. Norway.
